Misconception related to the reproduction in earthworm

Earthworm are simultaneously hermaphrodite meaning worms have both male and female reproductive organs . The common misconception is that they can reproduce asexually , that is , only one parent. But the earthworm cannot produce offspring by its own .

• A mutual exchange of sperm occurs between two worms during mating.  They mate juxtaposing( two worms line up against one another facing opposite directions ) opposite gonadal openings exchanging packets of sperms called spermatophores.

• Development of earthworm is direct ,i.e., there is no larva formed.
